“I kept hearing him say, ‘Kirk won’t say this line, Kirk doesn’t like this dialogue.’ Worse, he even wanted to steal other characters’ lines,” the director explained. “He was making really corny suggestions like we were shooting a B movie from the 1940s.”

Despite multiple attempts at compromise by Sylvester Stallone and the director, the actor remained dissatisfied with the script provided to him.

The Ultimatum that Changed Everything

As discussions continued, the situation became problematic for the production. According to Ted Kotcheff, the constant negotiations over every line of dialogue threatened the shooting schedule directly. Faced with this deadlock, the director alerted the producers.

“He’s going to cost us an extra two weeks of filming because I have to negotiate every line he says,” Kotcheff explained.

The producers then authorized him to definitively resolve the issue. Kotcheff confronted the actor, giving him two options: accept the script as it was approved or leave the project. Douglas’s response was immediate: “Kirk is leaving.”

A Last-Minute Replacement Becomes Iconic

Following this unexpected departure, the production quickly found a replacement. Richard Crenna was chosen to step into the role of Colonel Trautman at the last minute.

This change did not prevent “Rambo” from achieving monumental success. With its focus on the psychological trauma of Vietnam War veterans, the film quickly became a global phenomenon.

Produced for about 15 million dollars, it garnered over 125 million dollars at the international box office. In France, nearly three million viewers flocked to theaters to watch John Rambo’s adventures.
