Far from the outer space settings of “Alien,” Ridley Scott immerses viewers this time in the streets of a dystopian Los Angeles. The action is set in 2019, in a megalopolis submerged in rain, drowned in neon lights, pollution, and giant advertisements.

In this universe, Rick Deckard, a former police officer specialized in tracking “replicants,” is called back to duty. His mission is to locate several of these androids, nearly indistinguishable from humans, after they rebel and murder a spaceship crew.

When the Line Between Man and Machine Blurs

The film loosely draws inspiration from Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” But “Blade Runner” goes far beyond simply adapting the American author’s book to the screen.

Its detective plot serves as a starting point for a much broader reflection on what truly defines a human being. The replicants possess human-like appearances, experience emotions, and are haunted by their own mortality. Consequently, the separation between their creators and themselves becomes increasingly blurred.

Memory, identity, artificial intelligence, death, dehumanization: these are among the themes the film intertwines, without necessarily providing definitive answers. This ambiguity continues to add to its richness today and has fueled countless debates about Deckard’s true nature.

A Failure Turned Cyberpunk Reference

From Blade Runner 2049 to Black Lotus

To bridge the gap between the two films, three shorts were also produced: “2036: Nexus Dawn,” “2048: Nowhere to Run,” and “Blade Runner: Black Out 2022.” They revisit certain events that occurred during the three decades separating the stories of the two films.

The franchise then expanded to television with the animated series “Blade Runner – Black Lotus,” launched in 2021 and also set in this universe. The upcoming mini-series “Blade Runner 2099,” expected on Prime Video on November 25, is one of the most anticipated events of the year.
