Tonight on TV: The Cult Film That Launched Brad Pitt’s Career & a Fantastic Friendship Tale!

Every day, AlloCiné suggests a film to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight’s feature: Brad Pitt encounters two best friends on the run.

Nine years after the initial box office failure (which later became a huge success) of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott shifted from science fiction to a dramatic comedy brought to life by an outstanding pair of actresses: Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon.

Ending the suspense, of course, we’re talking about the iconic Thelma & Louise. In 1991, Ridley Scott crafted the wild tale of two best friends who, fed up with their dull lives, decided to take a road trip across Arkansas.

However, at their first stop, a local bar, the fate of Thelma and Louise takes a dramatic turn. After a tragic incident, the women find themselves on the run, trying to reach the Mexican border…

While the two main characters are portrayed by women, the rest of the cast is predominantly male. Among them are actors such as Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs), Michael Madsen (Kill Bill), Christopher McDonald (Requiem for a Dream), and Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day).

And of course, let’s not forget the presence of a then relatively unknown young actor, who is now considered one of the greatest of his generation: Brad Pitt.

The American actor, not yet thirty, played J.D., a sexy hitchhiker with a cowboy flair, who shares a memorable love scene with Geena Davis.

But what really makes the film so special isn’t just the appearance of this young blonde; it’s the story of friendship between Thelma Dickinson and Louise Sawyer.

Thelma & Louise, an Ode to Female Friendship

It must be acknowledged, this famed road trip directed by Ridley Scott is the quintessential buddy film, as evidenced by Thelma’s iconic line: “Louise, no matter what happens, I’m glad I came with you!

French actress Noémie Merlant, guest on the show Le Cercle on Canal+, called Thelma & Louise a “heart-wrenching story of friendship.” And it’s clear that many viewers agree, as reflected in reviews on AlloCiné:

It’s really a beautiful story of friendship and freedom” (Benjamin A)

Ridley Scott tells a very beautiful story of friendship with these two women who stick together to face the dramatic situation they’ve gotten themselves into” (Chris46)

An essential cinematic experience, both for its captivating story and its universal message about friendship” (Theo)

A wonderful story of friendship that serves as the backdrop for this original and moving road movie” (Adicte)

And when actress Geena Davis is asked about the possibility of a remake dedicated to this remarkable story of friendship, her answer is very clear: “Thelma and Louise should never be remade“. That settles it!
