After 18 Years, a New Movie Joins One of the Best Action Sagas of the Last 30 Years!

The legendary figure of Ip Man, a cornerstone of Chinese martial arts, is set to grace the silver screen once again in an upcoming action film, much to the delight of genre enthusiasts.

Ip Man, the grandmaster of Wing Chun and mentor to Bruce Lee, was first brought to global prominence through four films starring Donnie Yen from 2008 to 2019. Born on October 1, 1893, in Foshan, he passed away on December 2, 1972, in Hong Kong. The character will return to cinemas portrayed by Yu-Hang To (Dennis To).

According to Variety, the new installment, titled “Ip Man: Kung Fu Legacy,” is scheduled to start filming in October with a planned release in 2027. The original Ip Man series, led by Donnie Yen, has become one of the most iconic martial arts film series over the past 30 years.

A Martial Arts Legend

The spin-offs starring Dennis To have carved out their own niche within this universe, offering a younger, more traditional take on the Wing Chun master. Dennis To first appeared as Ip Man in “The Legend Is Born: Ip Man” in 2010 and reprised the role in “Ip Man: Kung Fu Master” in 2019 and “Ip Man: Kung Fu Legend” in 2025.

Additionally, the franchise includes four main films and several spin-offs, such as “Ip Man: The Final Fight,” “The Awakening of the Master,” and “Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy.” The series has enjoyed significant critical and commercial success worldwide. Renowned director Wong Kar-Wai also explored the legend’s journey in “The Grandmaster” in 2013, featuring Tony Leung as Ip Man.

The Legend Continues

Details about the plot of the new installment are currently under wraps. It seems likely to be a direct sequel to “Kung Fu Legend.” This film recounts the early years of the young Ip Man, long before he became the famed mentor to Bruce Lee.

While serving as a police captain, he is wrongly accused of murdering a gangster and targeted by the gangster’s vengeful daughters. Forced to leave the police force, Ip Man also confronts the arrival of the Japanese army in Guangzhou.

As a revered figure in Chinese martial arts, Ip Man’s story continues to unfold on film, much to the pleasure of fans. The saga blends stylized action with historical drama, tracing the hero’s life through the Japanese occupation, post-war Hong Kong, and the shifts in Chinese identity.
