AOC Surges Ahead of Schumer by 20 Points in 2028 NY Primary, Poll Reveals

“AOC’s Leadership is Evident and People Recognize It,” Comments One Analyst

A recent survey from the progressive research group Data for Progress, released on Friday, shows Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leading ahead of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer by 19 points in a speculative 2028 New York primary for a U.S. Senate seat.

The poll, initially shared with Politico, reports that 55% of the electorate would vote for Ocasio-Cortez or were leaning towards her, compared to 36% who would support Schumer or were leaning towards him, with 9% still undecided.

The only demographic that preferred Schumer over Ocasio-Cortez were moderate voters, who supported Schumer 50% to 35%, with 15% undecided. Ocasio-Cortez garnered the majority support in all other demographics, except for voters aged over 45, where 49% either supported her directly or were leaning towards her.

The timing of the poll is significant, following Schumer’s controversial decision to back a GOP-favored spending bill in early March, which upset many within his party and led to calls for his resignation from his Senate leadership role.

This decision also stirred some Democratic Party members to suggest that Ocasio-Cortez should challenge Schumer in the 2028 primaries.

The survey, conducted between March 26 and March 31, included 767 likely Democratic primary voters across New York state. According to Data for Progress, the results of this hypothetical matchup between Ocasio-Cortez and Schumer remain “relatively static” even when additional information about the candidates is provided to the voters.

Recently, Ocasio-Cortez has sidestepped questions about her potential Senate run in 2028, as reported by Politico.

Bhaskar Sunkara, president of The Nation, expressed his anticipation for such a political change, stating, “Replacing Chuck Schumer with AOC would be an incredible upgrade. I guess we’ll have to wait four more years…”

Zephyr Teachout, a law professor at Fordham University, praised the leadership qualities of Ocasio-Cortez in a tweet sharing Politico’s article on the poll: “Good morning to leadership and fighting oligarchy!” Teachout also noted that a significant 84% of the poll’s respondents want their leaders to more actively oppose the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Market researcher Adam Carlson pointed out that despite Schumer’s potential loss in the hypothetical matchup, most polled demographics still view him favorably. Aside from “very liberal” voters and those aged 18-44, Schumer maintains a favorable rating above 50% among all other groups surveyed.

Carlson summed it up by saying, “People just want a changing of the guard.”
