Avatar 3: Meet the Actress Behind Varang, James Cameron’s New Villain!

In James Cameron’s “Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes,” Oona Chaplin takes on the role of Varang, the main antagonist in the third installment of the series. AlloCiné caught up with the actress from one of the world’s most illustrious cinema families.

Her name carries a significant legacy. Oona Chaplin comes from one of the most renowned families in the history of cinema. She is the daughter of actress Geraldine Chaplin and the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, the legendary film icon and the man behind the beloved character, The Tramp.

In “Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes,” the third chapter of James Cameron’s epic saga, she portrays Varang, the leader of the rival Mangkwan clan. By joining this groundbreaking blockbuster known for its technological innovations, she represents a bridge between two eras of cinema history.

Speaking at the European premiere of Avatar at La Seine Musicale, the actress shared with AlloCiné her thoughts on similarities between her grandfather and James Cameron:

There’s a resemblance. Both worked with the cutting-edge technologies of their times, constantly innovating and pushing boundaries, yet ultimately telling stories that resonate with the human heart. That’s why so many people connect with these narratives.”

She continued: “Charlie Chaplin made the whole world laugh and cry, infusing it with hope, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. No one will ever do what he did. No one. But James Cameron comes really close with Avatar.”

Oona Chaplin’s Early Career

As a child, Oona Chaplin was passionate about dance. She learned flamenco and salsa during her teenage years before moving to Scotland at the age of 15 to study dramatic arts. Later, she attended the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating at the age of 21.

Although initially gaining recognition in television, including roles such as John Watson’s girlfriend in an episode of “Sherlock” and a part in “Black Mirror,” she is best known for her portrayal of Talisa Stark in seasons 2 and 3 of “Game of Thrones.”

With “Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes,” the actress marks her first significant film role. She has already been confirmed for the next two installments of the series.
