Before Netflix’s Wednesday, This Fantasy Film Returns to Cinemas 35 Years Later!

Released in American theaters back in 1991, “The Addams Family” is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary on the big screen: Barry Sonnenfeld’s film will make a return to France on February 18, 2026.

Start practicing your finger-snapping now to get ready for a manual karaoke session when the iconic theme plays on February 18, 2026, giving you plenty of time to perfect your technique before the return of The Addams Family. This isn’t the film to which Netflix’s hit “Wednesday” owes its existence, as the characters originally appeared in Charles Addams’ humorous cartoons published starting in 1938 in The New Yorker, and later featured in a TV series from 1964 to 1966 on ABC in the United States.

However, Barry Sonnenfeld’s film is undoubtedly the one that today’s audience most frequently associates with, having left a significant mark on pop culture at the dawn of the ’90s. It follows in the footsteps of the successes enjoyed by Tim Burton, who was crowned the new prince of the macabre a few years earlier, with hits like Beetlejuice, Batman, and Edward Scissorhands. So much so, that he is mistakenly credited by some as the creator of the film starring Angelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, and the late Raul Julia.

This confusion is understandable considering Tim Burton has always been a proclaimed fan of The Addams Family and even had a project to adapt Charles Addams’ work into a stop-motion film before he directed several episodes of “Wednesday,” featuring Christina Ricci and Christopher Lloyd. If you haven’t seen the feature film that premiered in April 1992 in French theaters (and a few months earlier in the United States), you will soon have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the 35th anniversary of a movie that captivated an entire generation of viewers.

Will the Sequel Also Return to Theaters?

If you are already familiar with the story of Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, and Pugsley dealing with the return of a Fester suspected of being an impostor, you’ll find that the film remains as delightful as ever in its handling of dark humor. And no doubt, you’ll want to (re)watch its sequel, “Addams Family Values,” although a re-release has not yet been announced. But it would be surprising if it weren’t also in the works, so keep practicing those finger snaps.
