Billionaire Jeff Bezos Offers to Aid Trump in Dismantling Regulation
On Wednesday, Jeff Bezos, the billionaire behind Amazon, shared his positive outlook for President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming term, indicating his willingness to assist the Republican in dismantling regulations.
“Discussing Trump, I find it quite fascinating. I’m actually quite hopeful about what’s to come… He appears to be very proactive about lessening regulatory burdens,” Bezos explained to Andrew Ross Sorkin of The New York Times at the newspaper’s DealBook Summit.
Bezos expressed, “From my perspective, if there’s a way I can aid him in this endeavor, I will, because our nation indeed has an excess of regulations. We are primed for growth,” hinting that slashing regulations could be the key to resolving economic issues in the country.
Voicing his frustrations about regulatory constraints, Bezos added, “I’m quite hopeful that President Trump is committed to this regulatory agenda, and I believe he stands a strong chance of making substantial headway.”
During a conversation about his ownership of The Washington Post, Bezos also touched on his recent decision to prevent the publication from endorsing Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and to cease all presidential endorsements, which has sparked considerable debate.
On this matter, Bezos stated on Wednesday that he is “very proud” of these decisions, asserting that the Post “will persist in covering all presidents with rigorous scrutiny,” and clarified that these decisions were not made out of concern for Trump potentially targeting his businesses.
Inc. magazine reported on Thursday that Trump had previously attacked Bezos and his enterprises, including Amazon and The Washington Post, during his presidency. In 2019, Amazon claimed in a legal case that Trump’s prejudice against the company had jeopardized its opportunity to secure a $10 billion Pentagon contract. Later, the Biden administration opted to award a contract to both Amazon and Microsoft.
Bezos, who also owns the aerospace firm Blue Origin, a rival to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, finds himself just behind Musk—who has been named the world’s wealthiest individual by both Bloomberg and Forbes. Musk, along with billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, has been selected to head Trump’s upcoming Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Following Bezos’ comments at the Times summit, Brooke Seipel from Fortune speculated that Bezos might be the next tycoon to join DOGE.
Musk and Ramaswamy were reported to have visited Capitol Hill on Thursday to discuss their governmental strategies with GOP legislators.
Despite its official-sounding name, “the Department of Government Efficiency is neither a department nor part of the government, which exempts Musk and Ramaswamy from undergoing the usual ethics and background checks required for federal positions,” noted The Associated Press. “They have stated they will not accept payment for their roles.”
