MSNBC’s Chris Hayes Exposes Fox News for Misleading Edit in Trump Coverage
On a recent MSNBC broadcast, evening anchor Chris Hayes highlighted a misleading edit by Fox News. The conservative network had aired a selectively edited clip of Donald Trump during an interview Bret Baier conducted with Kamala Harris, which aired during primetime.
The discussion with Baier was prompted by Trump’s recent statements where he labeled “the enemy from within” as the most significant threat to the United States. Furthermore, Trump expressed his willingness to deploy the National Guard and U.S. military against what he termed “radical-left lunatics,” explicitly naming Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a moderate Democrat currently campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat in California.
During the interview, when Harris pointed out Trump’s threats to use military force against Americans with differing political views, Baier interjected. He mentioned that Trump had addressed these comments earlier that day at a town hall event, also broadcast on Fox.
However, the clip Baier showed to viewers—and asked Harris to respond to—only contained a fraction of Trump’s actual remarks from the town hall. It notably omitted his repeated reference to Schiff and others as “the enemy from within” who needed to be confronted.
Hayes critically analyzed the situation on his show, stating that Baier used a “soundbite to try to clear Donald Trump of saying a thing in which he cut out the part where he says it.”
Behind the Scenes of the Edit
Hayes questioned the integrity of Fox’s editing choice, emphasizing, “[Trump] said—he repeated—’They are the enemy within… they’re sick people… they’re evil.’ He repeated it! And then Bret Baier’s like, ‘Let me play you what [Trump] said today,’ and just cut out the big chunk.”
In her response to the edited clip, Harris expressed her dismay to Baier, saying, “Bret, I’m sorry and with all due respect—that clip was not representative of his ongoing comments about the ‘enemy within’ concerning the American people. That’s not what you just showed.”
When Baier attempted to defend the clip as merely a response to a question, Harris countered, “You and I both know that he has talked about using the American military against American citizens. He has talked about targeting people engaged in peaceful protests. He has talked about imprisoning people just because they disagree with him.”
Harris emphasized the democratic principles at stake, stating, “This is a democracy. And in a democracy, the president of the United States should be able to handle criticism without resorting to incarceration for those who critique him. And this is the crux of the issue, highlighted by former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley’s comments regarding Donald Trump as a threat to the United States.”
Hayes concluded that this incident, where Trump did not back down from his authoritarian stance yet Fox News attempted to mitigate his statements, is typical of the network’s approach. “It’s the same playbook we see repeatedly from Fox,” he noted.
