Over the weekend, Maye Musk posted on X a photo of a document she had rediscovered: her son’s 1989 computer aptitude test from the University of Pretoria. The result? A flawless A+ in both programming and computer operations.
“My brilliant boy. A proud mom,” she wrote alongside the image. Elon himself replied, joking in his typical fashion: “They told me it was the best engineering aptitude score they had ever seen. Not bad for a human, as a future AI might say.”
The test predates his ventures into rockets and electric cars, but it highlights a genius already visible in his teens. Today, Forbes estimates Musk’s fortune at over $421 billion, placing him among the wealthiest people on Earth.
From cheap cereal to Texas rockets
Maye Musk often reminds people that her son’s story didn’t start in luxury. After her divorce in 1979, she raised her children with very limited means. In an interview with Fox News, she recalled Elon’s childhood complaint: “I wanted Coco Pops, but we only had Raisin Bran.”
Even now, despite his global empire, she insists that visits to her son aren’t glamorous. “You can’t have a luxury home near a rocket site,” she quipped about staying near the SpaceX facility in Texas.
A genius still in the spotlight
Decades after that test, Musk continues to make headlines—not just for rockets and cars but also for his AI company Grok and his outspoken political stances. At the same time, his leadership at Tesla faces growing scrutiny from investors worried about the company’s future.
