In an unexpected twist at the 2026 César Awards ceremony, Emmanuel Curtil, the French voice of Jim Carrey for the past 32 years, shared insights with AlloCiné about what makes the actor so extraordinary. This came as a heartfelt tribute to Carrey, who received a César d’honneur the previous evening.
One of the highlights of the event was the encounter between Jim Carrey, the 2026 César d’honneur recipient, and his long-time French dubbing counterpart, Emmanuel Curtil. It marked their first-ever meeting, and as Curtil humorously remarked on stage, he was “waiting for the right moment” for it to happen.
AlloCiné caught up with Emmanuel Curtil on the red carpet and asked what makes Jim Carrey so unique. “There’s something about Jim Carrey that struck me. Even though I’m familiar with his acting nuances and his brilliance, he always manages to surprise me,” he explained.
To be a great comedian, you must harbor some tragedy
“Above all, he possesses a trait that I haven’t seen in any other actor – he performs like a child. He has that kind of presence that children have in movies when they are acting well, of course. I think Jim Carrey retains this wonderful childlike quality, which is brilliant. And I wasn’t surprised when he ventured into dramatic roles in movies like Eternal Sunshine… Everyone thought, ‘Wow, he’s a real actor.'”
“Firstly, I believe it’s much harder to make people laugh than to make them cry. Moreover, I think that if you can do the more challenging task, you can certainly do the less challenging one. I believe that to be a great comedian, you need to possess an element of tragedy. And he can do it all. That’s really his hallmark.”
Which lesser-known Jim Carrey films does he recommend? “Man on the Moon was quite an under-the-radar release and wasn’t a blockbuster. It’s a truly beautiful film by Miloš Forman. And there’s another film by Frank Darabont, which I believe almost no one has seen, called The Majestic. It’s set in the 1950s, during the McCarthy era.”
“These are both quite dramatic films. But really, I recommend them. They are films that received critical acclaim and, in my opinion, deserved much more recognition than they got.”
Throughout his career, Emmanuel Curtil, with his golden voice, has crossed paths with Matthew Perry, Vince Vaughn, Kyle Chandler, Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Ben Stiller…
