If you’re a hardcore fan of Jim Carrey’s ’90s comedies, then you’ll get a kick out of this fun fact! It’s about one of the most unforgettable scenes from the iconic 1995 film.
If you grew up in the ’90s, you probably worship the ground Jim Carrey walks on, especially for his comedic trifecta: The Mask, Ace Ventura, and Dumb and Dumber. In these three wildly hilarious films, the Canadian actor rose to international fame, celebrated for his unmistakable comedic talent and his astounding improvisational skills.
An Iconic Improvisation
During the filming of Dumb and Dumber, Jim Carrey showcased his improvisational prowess in a scene that has since become legendary—the “most annoying sound in the world” scene. Remember this? Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and his buddy Harry (Jeff Daniels) are in a car with a passenger who endures the pair’s ridiculous antics.
Their unfortunate guest is Joe “Mental” Mentalino (Mike Starr), one of two henchmen hired to retrieve a briefcase that Harry and Lloyd have found. Throughout the ride, the two buffoons engage in antics that are increasingly exasperating.
The scene in English:
After losing his patience, Joe yells at them, demanding they stop. That’s when Jim Carrey improvises one of the film’s funniest moments. “Hey! You know the most annoying sound in the world?” he says to Harry, before launching into a piercing shriek that could burst eardrums.
The scene in French, featuring Emmanuel Curtil (Lloyd) and Dominique Collignon-Maurin (Harry):
Jeff Daniels discussed this scene during an interview with GQ in October 2021.
“There were moments, very few, when Jim would go off on a bit of improvisation. And one of the few was: ‘The most annoying sound in the world, you know?’ It was right in the middle of a take, and I was wondering: What is he doing? He screams: Eeeeeh! And so I just mimicked him, because, when in doubt, you mimic Jim. And that was pretty much it, I don’t remember other moments of improvisation,” he highlighted.
I simply mimicked him, because, when you don’t know what to do, you mimic Jim Carrey.
This brief sequence showcases Jim Carrey’s comedic genius, able to take over a scene and inject it with a comedic magic that only he can deliver! And if these few lines have made you want to watch the movie again, it’s available on Netflix and Prime Video.
