Fabrice Luchini Unveils New Role in “Victor comme tout le monde” – Find Out Why It’s Personal!

Pascal Bonitzer’s new film, “Victor Like Everyone,” premieres in theaters this Wednesday. This film pays tribute to the world of Victor Hugo, yet it steers clear of the traditional biopic format. Fabrice Luchini delivers a captivating performance in the lead role.

What’s the Story?

Imbued with the spirit of Victor Hugo, actor Robert Zucchini carries a gentle melancholy offstage. Nightly, he captivates audiences, sharing his love for literature. Everything changes when his estranged daughter reappears in his life… Could loving be more important than being admired for once?

“Victor Like Everyone” is not your typical film about Victor Hugo. It’s a unique blend of tribute and narrative, intertwining the life of Hugo with that of Fabrice Luchini, who plays a character very similar to himself named Robert Zucchini. He portrays a passionate, melancholic actor trying to reconnect with his daughter.

With inspired writing, the film weaves a complex story about theater, literature, and comedy, while exploring family relationships, all framed by Victor Hugo’s texts.

Separating Fact from Fiction

The film blurs the lines between reality and fiction! Is this character a fictional double of Fabrice Luchini? The actor clarifies, “Every role has a bit of ourselves in it, even though this character’s personal story isn’t mine at all!” While the personal story may be far from Luchini’s real life, the aspects of the film that deal with acting feel very authentic.

Some scenes were even shot during actual performances at Fabrice Luchini’s theater. “In Fabrice’s performances, there is an art that is uniquely his, involving the audience in the act,” explains Pascal Bonitzer, the director. “The challenge was how to integrate these performance excerpts without making them too lengthy or overpowering the narrative, yet still showcasing Fabrice’s craft and impacting the movie’s audience as much as the theater’s.

Parallels Between an Actor and a Writer

Therefore, “Victor Like Everyone” skillfully blends these elements, creating a unique film that is both a tribute and a study of the parallels between an actor and a writer. “This isn’t just a film about an actor in theater. It’s about life, about a craftsman obsessed with an idea to the exclusion of all else. It’s about a personality defined by what’s missing, which is something I’ve been finding more as I age,” Luchini remarks.

A Project Originally Envisioned by Filmmaker Sophie Fillières

It’s worth noting that the film had a unique beginning. It was initially a screenplay written by Sophie Fillières, who passed away on July 31, 2023. Pascal Bonitzer, who was close to the director, took over the project. Fillières, who began the project in 2020, was set to direct it herself before her long illness took its toll. This is the second of Fillières’ projects to be posthumously completed, following “My Life, My Face,” released in September 2024.
