François Cluzet’s Hilarious Hit: Celebrating 15 Years of a 2010s Cult Comedy Classic!

His role in “Little White Lies” stuck with him so much that he faced a barrage of criticism. Find out why François Cluzet became a target…

In 2010, “Little White Lies” took the French film industry by storm, garnering significant acclaim from critics and audiences alike. However, when a film becomes as popular as Guillaume Canet’s legendary dramedy – boasting 5.4 million admissions, no less – there’s often a downside: audiences might not distinguish between the actors and the characters they portray.

This was the case for François Cluzet, who played his grumpy role so convincingly that many branded him as genuinely irritable. On April 5th, the actor appeared on the show “C l’hebdo” on France 5, where he reminisced about the filming of the movie and the subsequent criticism he faced for his portrayal of a grumpy obsessive.

To recap, the film follows a group of friends who, after a shocking event, decide to go on their annual seaside vacation anyway. Their friendship, certainties, guilt, and loves are shaken. They must finally confront the “little white lies” they have been hiding about their secrets and lies.

With its stellar cast, including Marion Cotillard, Gilles Lellouche, Benoît Magimel, Valérie Bonneton, Jean Dujardin, and François Cluzet – just to name a few –, its meticulous direction and writing by Guillaume Canet, the comedy became one of the biggest box office hits of 2010. Perfectly embodying Max Cantara, the angry and inflexible friend responsible for many unforgettable scenes in the film, François Cluzet made a lasting impression: perhaps too much so, as he was later typecast as a perpetual curmudgeon in real life.

“I received a lot of criticism after ‘Little White Lies’; people were convinced I was a complainer!”, he stated on the set of “C l’hebdo”.

He also reflected on the iconic scene where his character yells on the phone in front of his guests because his gardener didn’t show up to mow the lawn, saying, “You should know that’s a trait of Guillaume Canet, he admitted it to me! It’s very funny to play, far more interesting than playing the smart guy. He’s a monomaniac, and I loved this role because I love being ridiculous. In real life, a bit less – it happens! – but as a performer, it’s a joy to make people laugh because you are ridiculous, monomaniacal, foolish, naive…”.

The Time When Guillaume Canet Turned Into the “Pool Hulk”

As Télé-Loisirs recalled, the shooting of “Little White Lies” was anything but smooth. In 2019, with the release of the film’s sequel “We’ll Finish Together,” a documentary revealing the behind-the-scenes of the production disclosed numerous previously unknown anecdotes, including one involving François Cluzet and the time he endured Guillaume Canet’s wrath due to a failed scene where he had to steer a boat.

“He takes off and he tilts on the wrong sandbank… I was furious!”, Guillaume Canet recounted in the documentary. Gilles Lellouche remembered this moment as the one where his longtime friend Guillaume transformed into the “Pool Hulk”: that would have been quite the sight!

In conclusion, appearances can be deceiving: François Cluzet is not grumpy and Guillaume Canet can turn into the Hulk!
