Every day, AlloCiné suggests a film to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight: Dive into the deep end with Guillaume Canet, Benoît Poelvoorde, and Philippe Katerine!
In the mood for a delightful French comedy tonight? Gilles Lellouche has just the thing with this daring film featuring a stellar cast who dive headfirst into a noble cause.
You might have guessed it; the movie is “Le Grand Bain.” Released in theaters in 2018, this comedy is as humorous as it is moving. It follows Bertrand, Marcus, Simon, Laurent, and Thierry, who all take the wild bet of trying their hands at synchronized swimming. Surprisingly, this activity helps them find new meaning in their lives…
The cast of this feel-good movie includes Mathieu Amalric, Guillaume Canet, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Benoît Poelvoorde, Philippe Katerine, and Alban Ivanov as the swimmers, while Virginie Efira and Leïla Bekhti play the two coaches, each with a completely different temperament.
Another Hit for Gilles Lellouche
Six years after “Les Infidèles,” which drew over 2.3 million viewers, and six years before “L’Amour ouf,” which impressively brought in 4.9 million moviegoers, Gilles Lellouche had already made a strong impact with this genuine buddy film, earning a 4.1 out of 5 rating.
The initial idea is rather dark, focusing primarily on depression, a plight that, as the director confided, “In this somewhat individualistic race that we all find ourselves trapped in, we forget about community, enthusiasm, and the joy of effort […] We live in a society where TV shows and debates are full of judgments and definitive opinions on everything, so I loved this bubble of sharing“.
Step by step, Gilles Lellouche managed to turn this subject into a pure feel-good movie where friends share an unusual passion, as he explained: “A group of more or less disillusioned men chasing after lost dreams“.
And it’s safe to say that “Le Grand Bain” resonated with a wide audience, attracting just as many French viewers as “L’Amour ouf”—4.9 million! With each new film, Lellouche’s success continues to grow.
That’s not all, as “Le Grand Bain” was nominated ten times at the César Awards, once at the Cannes Film Festival, and even won two Globes in 2019, including the Crystal Globe for Best Comedy Film. Quite an achievement!
