Patience is a virtue, especially for fans of the super-(anti)hero Peacemaker. Led by John Cena, the series makes a much-anticipated return after a three-year hiatus. The character first appeared in James Gunn’s film “The Suicide Squad,” before being given his own spin-off series.
A Career-Defining Role for John Cena
The first season’s success ensured a swift renewal for Peacemaker. However, shifts in leadership at DC Comics studios contributed to the delay. The superhero franchise was completely rebooted by James Gunn and Peter Safran, starting with this summer’s release of the Superman movie.
Peacemaker is one of the few DC characters who did not change actors due to the reboot. This is largely due to John Cena’s comedic brilliance, which has been essential in bringing the character to life on screen. James Gunn, eager to continue collaborating with the soon-to-retire WWE star, decided to go ahead with a second season.
The first season saw Peacemaker redeeming himself and assembling a team to undertake missions for ARGUS. In season 2, he confronts his past as he encounters Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the father of Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), whom he killed in “The Suicide Squad.”
Season 2 to Spearhead the Next Phase of the DC Franchise
It’s worth noting that the release of Peacemaker on August 22 is strategic. James Gunn has designed the plot of this second season to directly tie into the storyline of the recent Superman film released in July. Peacemaker even made a brief appearance in the movie, confirming that both works are set in the same interconnected universe.
It remains unclear whether season 2 will conclude the character’s story or if it will introduce new narrative threads that could lead to a third season. Nevertheless, this season is set to play a crucial role in the expansion of the DC franchise, as evidenced by confirmed appearances from Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced).
