In Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, Oldman played one of the few characters who keeps his feet on the ground amid the superheroes, masked criminals, and other eccentric figures of Gotham. Among all the formidable foes and allies of Batman that he encountered, it wasn’t the Joker by Heath Ledger, Tom Hardy’s Bane, or Cillian Murphy’s Scarecrow that impressed him the most. It was Batman himself.

Across the three films, Oldman felt intimidated by Christian Bale once he shed the billionaire Bruce Wayne attire and donned the Batman suit. In a 2012 interview with MovieWeb, Oldman shared his thoughts on the awe-inspiring presence Bale brought to the set as Batman. For him, Bale’s transformation was so complete that he almost forgot the actor beneath the mask.

“He No Longer Looks Like a Man”

Alongside actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played John Blake in “The Dark Knight Rises,” Oldman explained, “There’s something intimidating about him when he’s on set.” Continually impressed by the performance that earned Bale an MTV Awards and a Saturn Award, Oldman added, “When Christian puts on that suit, he really is there. There are no digital effects. It’s like watching a movie. He looks like a legend.“

The transformation went even further in Oldman’s eyes, as he revealed fourteen years ago: “He no longer looks like a man. He looks like Batman.” High praise indeed from someone who shared many scenes with Christian Bale in the successful trilogy.
