Every day, AlloCiné offers a film recommendation for your evening viewing. Tonight’s pick features Taron Egerton as the world’s most famous benevolent outlaw.
Counting the number of films that have retold the tale of Robin Hood is no small feat. The story of this celebrated outlaw has been adapted into feature films, TV movies, animated films, and even parodies.
Among the most famous are undoubtedly Disney’s Robin Hood, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner, and The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. However, today’s highlight is a completely different film…
Released in cinemas in 2018 and directed by Otto Bathurst (marking his feature film debut after directing several successful TV series episodes), this Robin Hood focuses on the precise moment when Robin of Loxley becomes Robin Hood.
The movie unfolds in three acts: starting with the crusades in which the hero participates, followed by a middle section filled with stunts and chase sequences where Robin Hood and Little John play a cat-and-mouse game with the sheriff, and concluding with a final showdown against the villain.
In this latest adaptation of Robin Hood, the hero is portrayed by Taron Egerton (Kingsman), while the character of Little John is played by Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained). They are joined by Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey), Eve Hewson (The True Adventures of Wolfboy), and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One).
Taron Egerton as the Outlaw Hero
As you can see, Robin Hood boasts an all-star cast, as well as the popularity of actor Taron Egerton, who notably won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his performance in Rocketman, where he portrayed Elton John.
Yet, the Welsh actor almost didn’t end up in this film. Initially, Jack Huston (Ben-Hur), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Dylan O’Brien (Maze Runner), and Nicholas Hoult (The Favourite) all auditioned to play the prince of thieves.
Ultimately, Taron Egerton, known for his physically demanding roles like his performances in the two Kingsman films and Eddie the Eagle, was chosen. And it’s safe to say that the 35-year-old actor excels in the role of the famous thief who rises up against injustice.
