The trailer for Michael Sarnoski’s “The Death of Robin Hood” featuring Hugh Jackman has just been released, offering a darker take on Thomas Love Peacock’s novel.
Hugh Jackman, previously known for roles such as Wolverine, Van Helsing, Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables,” P.T. Barnum in “The Greatest Showman,” and the notorious pirate Blackbeard in “Pan,” now steps into the boots of Robin Hood — a version of Robin of Loxley like we’ve never seen before on the silver screen!
In “The Death of Robin Hood,” directed by Michael Sarnoski (known for “Pig” and “A Quiet Place: Day One”), the Australian actor portrays an aging hero.
Produced by the American independent studio A24, this film presents a much darker reinterpretation of the classic tale by Thomas Love Peacock. The story follows a weary, solitary Robin Hood, tormented by his past sins and seriously wounded, who is cared for by a mysterious woman.
Robin Hood Was No Hero
In a December interview with Entertainment Weekly, director and screenwriter Michael Sarnoski discussed his portrayal of the legendary British hero: “He was a murderous outlaw who committed many terrible deeds, kind of a monster. Yet, he lived long enough to see the myth grow around him. He’s trying to grapple with his feelings about being depicted as a hero when he knows who he really was.” He added, “Even if you’re familiar with previous versions, you’ll find this take quite different from anything you’ve seen before.”
As for the film’s genre, don’t expect a children’s movie. The director elaborates, “It almost feels like a war movie. Back then, battles were brutal; it wasn’t about dancing and fencing. It was people in the mud trying to bash each other’s skulls in with shovels.”
These comments are now underscored by the first trailer and a poster whose tagline reads, “He was not a hero.”

These initial glimpses promise a violent and introspective film supported by a prestigious cast including Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe.
“The Death of Robin Hood” is set to hit theaters later in 2026. Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman can be seen in Craig Brewer’s “On a Blues Tune.”
