Do you remember David Ayer’s Suicide Squad? Released in theaters ten years ago, this feature film brought together the most nefarious villains from the DC Comics universe. It was one of the big summer events of 2016 but received a cold shoulder from critics who criticized its muddled plot and uneven tone.
Scoundrels of the Worst Kind
This version of the Suicide Squad, frostily received by the press, tells the story of a group of the worst scoundrels, assembled to tackle a mysterious and invincible threat. Heavily armed by the government, these super-villains embark on a suicide mission, only to realize they’ve been sacrificed. Will they accept their fate or fight back?
Action-packed, humorous, and politically incorrect, Suicide Squad still offers more than the torrent of criticism it faced. One of its biggest strengths? An all-star cast! In this explosive version of Suicide Squad, you have, among others, Will Smith, Margot Robbie (who has a particularly bad memory of one scene) and Jared Leto, with the latter two delivering memorable performances. Robbie portrays Harley Quinn with passion, humor, and madness, while Leto is remarkable as her boyfriend, the iconic Joker!
Jared Leto Refuses to Speak to Will Smith!
To embody the Joker on screen, Jared Leto was so committed that he didn’t speak to Will Smith outside of their shared scenes during the six months of filming! “He was really deep into his character,” noted Smith, somewhat stunned.
It’s also worth noting that according to E! Online, a psychotherapist was hired by the production of Suicide Squad to support the actors, aiming to prevent them from becoming too similar to their dark and tormented characters.
Critical and Public Failure but Box Office Success
Despite poor reviews, with an average rating of 2.1 out of 5 from critics and slightly better from viewers at AlloCiné (2.5 out of 5), Suicide Squad still managed a respectable box office haul. The film grossed nearly 750 million dollars worldwide and drew about 2.3 million viewers to French theaters. Perhaps it’s time to give this team of super-villains another chance?
