Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight’s pick: Joaquin Phoenix in one of his most significant roles.
On October 2, 2024, one of the year’s most anticipated films hit theaters: Todd Phillips’ Joker: Madness for Two, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. If you haven’t yet secured your movie tickets, the leading TV channel offers a timely reminder by airing the initial installment… Joker.
Recall, five years ago, we were introduced in theaters to this gripping psychological thriller about the life of Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, a man scorned by society and struggling with severe psychiatric disorders.
Joker depicts the slow and tumultuous descent into madness of this troubled man: from his relentless attempts to be a comedian to his obsession with uncovering his past, leading to his spiral into madness and violence against the immorality of the world.
Among the lines that best capture the tormented spirit of Arthur Fleck, there is this iconic quote: “I used to think that my life was a tragedy. Now I realize it’s a f*cking comedy.”
This dark feature is carried magnificently by a breathtaking Joaquin Phoenix. To get into the skin of this complex character, for which he won the Oscar, the BAFTA, and the Golden Globe for Best Actor, he lost so much weight that he was practically skin and bones.
Joker Tops The Dark Knight
With an average audience rating of 4.4 out of 5 and a critic’s score of 4.1 out of 5, Joker ranks among the top films of the decade. Even more impressive, it managed to outperform the incredible The Dark Knight at the French box office.
Indeed, Todd Phillips’ film garnered 5,606,581 admissions in France, compared to 3,017,442 for Christopher Nolan’s film. Not only that, but it is also the highest-grossing film worldwide for a movie restricted to viewers under 17 without an adult. Quite the feat!
Currently, it seems that the sequel Joker: Madness for Two is having a tougher time winning over critics (with an average of 2.8 out of 5) and audiences (2.4 out of 5).
