Currently starring in “Last Chance Project,” Ryan Gosling will continue his cinematic journey among the stars with the release of “Starfighter,” a “Star Wars” movie set for May 2027, in which he will play the lead role.
Is it fair to say Ryan Gosling has a love affair with the cosmos? First stepping onto the moon as Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s biopic, he now plays humanity’s last hope (alongside a rock-shaped alien) in the sci-fi film “Last Chance Project,” a genre he’s no stranger to, having also starred in the “Blade Runner” sequel directed by Denis Villeneuve.
And his exploration doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon, as the actor will launch into the far, far away galaxy of “Star Wars” on May 25, 2027, coinciding with the saga’s 50th anniversary, in the Shawn Levy-directed “Starfighter.”
While details about the movie are scarce at this point, it is known that the plot will unfold five years after the events of Episode IX, “The Rise of Skywalker.” Gosling’s character will be tasked with protecting a child (Flynn Gray, seen in “Wednesday”) from a menacing group of villains, leading him on an intergalactic journey that includes travels over water, as hinted by the first official photo.
Given the director’s track record with films like “Night at the Museum,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and episodes of “Stranger Things” (which he also produced), expectations are high that “Star Wars: Starfighter,” although a standalone entry in the franchise, will carry the spirit of Amblin productions like “The Goonies” and “Gremlins,” similar to the vibe in the “Skeleton Crew” series starring Jude Law. However, fans will have to wait for the first visuals to be sure.
The movie will also reveal the roles and appearances of Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, and Matt Smith, about whom little is currently known. Notably, the former “Doctor Who” star, previously directed by Gosling in his only directorial effort to date, will portray the main antagonist of the film, providing him a redemptive opportunity after a previously failed engagement with “Star Wars – Episode IX” a few years back.
“A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity”
In just under fourteen months, audiences will get to see what promises to be one of the major events of 2027. A “Star Wars” film always creates a buzz, and this marks Gosling’s first foray into an already well-established major franchise since “Blade Runner 2049.” Despite often being wrongly linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and reportedly turning down the role of Joker in “Suicide Squad” — a role that ultimately went to Jared Leto — Gosling’s involvement in this project is significant.
What prompted this shift in the actor’s alignment with major film franchises? “It was Shawn Levy’s enthusiasm, vision, and the script,” explained Gosling in an interview with io9 last February. “I had always dodged these things because they didn’t feel right. And I’m glad I did because, just like with a book like ‘Last Chance Project’ by Andy Weir, it was worth the wait. And it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” May patience be with us now.
