Before his role in “The Rookie,” Nathan Fillion endured grueling shoots on “Castle.” With a relentless pace, mounting fatigue, and constant pressure, the actor reflects on those challenging years and how he managed the stress.
Fans of crime dramas undoubtedly recognize Nathan Fillion from before his time on “The Rookie.” For eight seasons, he starred as the main character, Richard Castle, on “Castle.” However, filming this series was anything but easy, as the actor shared in an interview. Indeed, he felt overwhelmed and exhausted by the demanding schedule.
As noted by our colleagues at AdoroCinema, in 2022, Nathan Fillion revealed on the podcast “Inside of You” hosted by Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), just how taxing the “Castle” shoots were: “‘Castle’ was stressful, simply because of the filming schedule. It was relentless. Five, sometimes six days [a week].“
When asked how he coped during that time, he mentioned his appearance from 2009 to 2016, during the show’s run: “You can see photos of me from that time. Over the years, I became more and more tired and bloated.“
Nevertheless, he eventually saw light at the end of the tunnel. Today, he believes that one can endure such a demanding pace if one knows there is a foreseeable end to the process. The end date for his current series, “The Rookie,” is not yet known, but the show has reached its 8th season, which began airing in January 2026.
What is “Castle” About?
“Castle” follows Richard Castle (Fillion), a mystery novelist who becomes involved in real-life investigations after a murderer mimics the crimes described in his books. He then gets permission to accompany the New York City Police as a consultant, drawing from his field experiences to write a new series of novels.
Throughout the investigations, Castle works closely with Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). Despite their contrasting personalities—he’s flamboyant and creative, she’s serious and methodical—they form an effective team in solving murders, developing a relationship punctuated by humor, tension, and romantic moments over the seasons.
“Castle” is available on Disney+. As for “The Rookie: Feds”, the series can also be found on Disney+, as well as on Netflix.
