Directed and written by Fred Cavayé, “Les Misérables” brings Victor Hugo’s classic to the screen once again with an epic new adaptation, following in the footsteps of recent hits like “The Count of Monte Cristo”. Explore the final trailer.
Just a few more weeks until Fred Cavayé’s Les Misérables hits theaters. As the film is set to compete at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, StudioCanal has released the new trailer for this adaptation of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece.
What strikes about these visuals is the epic dimension infused into this often-adapted story, both in France and in the United States. The goal is to present the audience with a French blockbuster, filmed over 17 weeks, in the same vein as The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and more recently the two-part La Bataille de Gaulle, which has already drawn over 5 million viewers to theaters.
An Exceptional Cast
This scale is reflected in the lavish costumes and sets. “They gave me the opportunity to make the movie I’ve dreamed of, Fred Cavayé beamed during the presentation of The Original+. I felt like an 8-year-old playing with soldiers: I had all these sets, extras, and these brilliant actors.“
Speaking of actors, that’s another strong point of this new adaptation. A stellar cast has been assembled for this project: Vincent Lindon plays Jean Valjean; Tahar Rahim is Inspector Javert; Noémie Merlant is Fantine; Camille Cottin and Benjamin Lavernhe are cast as the Thénardiers, while Megan Northam and Vassili Schneider play Cosette and Marius, respectively. Finally, Marie Colomb embodies Éponine.
The Story of the Film
The official synopsis of the film goes like this: “Jean Valjean, a former convict who escaped the prison where he spent 19 years for stealing bread, now dedicates himself to doing good. He creates a new identity as a respected gentleman and aids Fantine, a dying worker, by promising to rescue her daughter, little Cosette, from the exploitative innkeepers, the Thénardiers.
As Valjean cares for the child and raises her as his own, his past catches up to him in the form of Inspector Javert, who has relentlessly pursued him over the years. Amidst the social upheaval shaking France, the fates of Valjean, Cosette, her lover Marius, and Javert intertwine in a tumultuous, revolutionary Paris. Through struggles, sacrifices, and a deep desire for justice, Valjean strives to complete his path of redemption and offer Cosette a future of love and freedom.”
