In the science fiction drama “Chien 51” directed by Cédric Jimenez, there’s a karaoke scene that almost didn’t make the final cut, featuring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Gilles Lellouche. It stands out as a moment of levity amidst the film’s darker tones.
One particularly memorable scene in “Chien 51” is a karaoke sequence. When we had the chance to speak with the film’s crew, we couldn’t help but ask about this musical moment, which contrasts sharply with the rest of the film’s atmosphere.
This playful scene was almost left on the cutting room floor. Cédric Jimenez shared with us that aside from the action scenes, this was his favorite to shoot. “It’s quite unique because it felt somewhat outside of the film—it’s really a break in the narrative. We shot this karaoke scene using LED screens, which involved a rather special technique.
While filming it, I kept thinking I hope it fits in the movie because I love it. It’s a small digression within the story, a little parenthesis.
I think it has a fantastic place in the movie. It adds a lot to these two characters, and it brings light into this world. It’s great news that it made it into the final cut.”
While Cédric Jimenez speaks about the joy this scene brought him, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Gilles Lellouche discuss the challenges it presented!
“It was horrible. It was hot. But really, singing is tough! Singing feels very exposing. It’s extremely hard. But people were right. They told us that the audience would enjoy the scene.”

A Song Previously Featured in a Beloved TV Series!
Music lovers or TV series fans might recognize that the song was previously used in a karaoke scene in the series “Sense8.” Did this fact influence the song choice? Cédric Jimenez responds.
“Actually, it was not intentional because I chose this song before I knew about its use in ‘Sense8,’ and it made me wonder for a long time whether I should change it. It’s a bit bothersome as it’s already been done… We don’t like to repeat things that have been done, but I loved the song so much that I thought, never mind, this is what you want to do, this is what you like, this is the song you want, and you didn’t choose it for that reason, so keep it. And yes, it can be seen as a nod.”
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Adèle Exarchopoulos has performed karaoke in a film. She previously made a strong impression in “Les Cinq diables.”
