“Playing with Fire” unveils the unraveling dynamics of a family when the eldest son starts to engage with extremist groups. Featuring Vincent Lindon, the movie hits theaters on Wednesday, January 22.
Vincent Lindon and Benjamin Voisin star in “Playing with Fire,” set for release in theaters on January 22.
The film follows the story of Pierre, a single father raising his two sons. Louis, the younger son, excels in his studies and moves through life with ease. Fus, the older son, veers off track. Captivated by violence and power struggles, he starts associating with far-right groups, clashing with his father’s values. Pierre watches helplessly as these influences begin to dominate his son. Gradually, love is replaced by misunderstanding…
For his role in “Playing with Fire,” Vincent Lindon was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. Benjamin Voisin, who won Best New Male Hope at the 2022 César Awards for “Lost Illusions,” plays the mesmerizing and dangerous Fus, in stark contrast to his father’s principles. Alongside him, Stefan Crepon, nominated for Best New Male Hope at the 2023 César Awards for his role in “Peter von Kant,” portrays Louis, the successful younger brother who overshadows his sibling.
Directed by Delphine and Muriel Coulin, “Playing with Fire” is based on the novel “Ce qu’il faut de nuit” by Laurent Petitmangin. This social and political drama resonates particularly with the current era: “In the 2012 presidential elections in France, we predominantly voted left, and in the 2024 European elections, predominantly for the National Rally. What happened during those twelve years?” Delphine Coulin questions. “For us, the story of Pierre, who no longer recognizes his son, mirrors that of an entire country.”
Beyond the political divide, the film primarily explores familial ties and the concept of unconditional love. How do you cope with loved ones when you no longer share the same values?
Both personal and universal, “Playing with Fire” is a must-watch in theaters starting Wednesday, January 22.
