Still skeptical? Examine their track record.
Imagine if someone thought it wise to speed at 80 miles per hour in a school zone while the warning lights were flashing. Should a tragedy occur, resulting in the death of one or more children, how would the justice system respond?
The individual could claim in court that there was no intention to cause harm, yet this defense would hardly clear them. At the very least, the charge would be vehicular manslaughter, and more likely, due to the extreme recklessness in a sensitive area, they might face charges of aggravated murder.
We lack the ability to read minds and truly understand someone’s intentions; instead, we must deduce intent from actions. When someone engages in behavior that predictably leads to negative outcomes, it is essentially the same as if they intended those outcomes. The principle that accepting the means also implies accepting the ends should not only apply in legal contexts but in everyday judgments, especially concerning public officials and their governance.
Considering this, let’s review the actions of President Donald Trump during his first term, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. His initial dismissal of the virus’s threat, as he admitted to journalist Bob Woodward, was driven by a desire to prevent panic in the financial markets, clearly prioritizing economic interests over human lives. His subsequent avoidance of endorsing masks and social distancing, along with his support for baseless theories, undoubtedly exacerbated the situation.
Trump’s handling of the pandemic should by itself be reason enough to bar him from public office in the future.
As reported by Scientific American, during the last year of Trump’s term, over 450,000 Americans died from COVID-19, and life expectancy dropped by 1.13 years, marking the most significant decline since World War II. Notably, the publication pointed out that the COVID-19 death rate in the U.S. was 40% higher than the average among the wealthy G7 nations, translating to about 140,000 preventable deaths due to his negligence.
Regrettably, due to the short memories and limited awareness of the American populace, we find ourselves coerced into another four-year term of what can only be described as criminal misuse of taxpayer funds under his leadership.
Trump’s second term appears to be an amplified continuation of his first, with moves like dismantling key research initiatives in the Department of Health and Human Services and ousting the FDA’s top vaccine expert. These actions seem designed to weaken public health defenses. Similarly, a proposed $12 billion cut in state health services will likely have dire consequences.
The Secretary of HHS, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., has proposed reintroducing placebo testing for vaccines, disregarding decades of ethical standards due to the risks it poses to participants, given the established effectiveness of vaccines. This raises questions about Kennedy’s judgment and the motives of the senators who confirmed him despite these glaring issues.
Changes to veterans’ health programs under the Trump administration have paralleled these troubling patterns. The reduction of staff and programs and the suspension of clinical trials at the VA were overseen by Secretary Doug Collins, whose incompetence has been as evident as his disdainful attitude. Yet, the senators who confirmed him share the blame for any resultant harm to veterans.
Why would the Trump administration eliminate the terrorist database at the Department of Homeland Security? Considering that many domestic terrorism threats stem from right-wing extremists, it seems they prefer to increase the likelihood of terror, potentially to justify extreme measures like martial law. Similarly, massive cuts to FEMA suggest a willingness to let disaster-stricken communities suffer.
The decision by Trump’s Agriculture Department to withdraw a rule limiting salmonella in poultry seems to prioritize industry profits over public safety, reflecting a broader disregard for human life. This approach is evident across various policies and actions of his administration.
What drives this blatant disregard for human well-being? Observers of Trump’s behavior over the years would recognize a pattern of narcissism and apathy towards others. Yet, why do so many Americans support him, almost to the point of reverence?
A significant segment of Trump’s base includes religious fundamentalists obsessed with apocalyptic prophecies, seeing little value in preserving life or society’s current structure. This attitude is mirrored in their participation in events like “Covid parties” and “measles parties,” which dangerously flirt with fatal diseases.
What explains this persistent disregard for human life? Observing Trump’s behavior, one could conclude he harbors a deep-seated narcissism that makes him indifferent to the suffering of others.
Another contributing factor is the survivalist community, which paradoxically yearns for the societal collapse they fear, believing it would validate their preparedness and worldview.
Feeding into these fears are right-wing media outlets that have long stoked paranoia with dire warnings of imminent economic or societal collapse. Since the oil crises of the 1970s, a segment of Americans has been bracing for a societal downfall, hoarding ammunition and gold.
Adding to this volatile mix are the neo-reactionary tech moguls from Silicon Valley, whose financial contributions bolster Trump’s political endeavors. Authors like Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor describe their vision as “End Times Fascism,” a scenario where societal breakdown is seen not only as inevitable but desirable.
Their vision, as depicted in Neal Stephenson’s “Snow Crash,” involves dismantling traditional nation-states in favor of technocratic city-states, a grim prospect that now aligns with the Republican Party’s unofficial agenda. The harmful outcomes of their policies are not accidental but intentional.
No, rather they are deliberate: Republicans seemingly have a vested interest in your demise.
