The Saw horror movie series, which began in 2004, continues to thrive. A hallmark of the series is its collection of horrifying and cunning traps. But which one is James Wan’s favorite, the director of the first film?
Unstoppable like the legendary Boogeymen… Launched in 2004 by the diabolical duo James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the Saw series, known for its torture porn genre, has released installments over the years that vary widely in quality…
This inconsistency hasn’t deterred producers, who are delighted to milk a franchise that will soon add an eleventh (!!) installment, scheduled for 2025; just two years after Saw X, which grossed only $111 million at the box office. Although modest, this figure still makes the film profitable, given its very low production budget of $13 million. Over 20 years, the series has amassed more than one billion dollars.
One of the trademarks of the series is undoubtedly its collection of devious and twisted traps; each more gruesome and ingenious than the last. From the needle-filled swimming pool trap and the hand trap in Saw 2, the angel trap in Saw 3, the pendulum trap in Saw 5, to the glass cage trap in Saw: 3D, our (bruised) hearts are torn…
A Trap That Packs a Punch
In an interview with People on the occasion of the first film’s 20th anniversary, James Wan revealed his favorite trap. Which one does he find most terrifying? “It’s really the jaw trap. I mean, that one has become so iconic. Obviously, it ended up on the poster, so that one is the most iconic for me.”
It’s hard to disagree with James Wan. Imagine a bear trap, but functioning in reverse, clamped onto someone’s jaws. This is the situation faced by Amanda (Shawnee Smith) in Saw. The key to the device is relatively easy to access, allowing her to be one of the few to escape from Jigsaw’s twisted imagination.
A tense moment worth revisiting in pictures…
Such an iconic trap that it was even featured again in Saw: 3D. We can trust Kevin Greutert, the director of the upcoming Saw 11, to come up with even more twisted and unhealthy ideas…
