Glen Powell confirms: Arnold Schwarzenegger has given him the thumbs up to star in the upcoming remake of “The Running Man” set for release later this year. Here’s what he said.
Glen Powell has received Arnold Schwarzenegger’s blessing to portray Ben Richards in the upcoming remake of his 1987 action film, “The Running Man,” which is expected to premiere at the end of this year. During the launch of his new condiment line, Smash Kitchen, Powell told People that he had a FaceTime conversation with Schwarzenegger and got his approval to take on the role.
“Arnold gave us his blessing,” he stated, adding that he and director Edgar Wright reached out to the “Terminator” star before beginning production on the remake. “Patrick Schwarzenegger is a great friend, and I asked Patrick if I could talk to Arnold. I hadn’t seen him since filming ‘Expendables’ in Bulgaria,” explained Glen Powell.
He continued: “Arnold gave us his blessing and we will be giving Arnold a unique and fun gift from the film in a few weeks. I’m really looking forward to seeing [Arnold].“
Based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel of the same name, the original “The Running Man” featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as a man who participates in a televised game where convicted criminals are hunted by professional killers. The movie, released in 1987, was directed by Paul Michael Glaser.
Glen Powell also appeared earlier this month at Cinemacon with his upcoming film’s co-stars, Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin, to showcase some never-before-seen footage of the new “The Running Man.” “This game isn’t just a game… life and death are common stakes,” Domingo’s character tells Powell in the trailer. “We’re in America, damn it, and we don’t tolerate any nonsense.“
Before unveiling the trailer, Powell shared with attendees that filming “The Running Man” was “the toughest thing he’s ever done.” The production of the movie began in London last September, almost 37 years after the original film hit theaters with Schwarzenegger.
“The Running Man” by Edgar Wright, starring Glen Powell, will hit theaters on November 5, 2025.
