Nearly four decades after David Cronenberg’s classic, a new film set in the world of “The Fly” is currently in development. Here’s what we know.
The concept of remaking “The Fly” has been floating around Hollywood for a few years now. Rumors have even suggested a new iteration featuring a female lead. While a movie is definitely in the works, it isn’t exactly a remake.
According to Deadline, Twentieth Century Studios is developing a project that exists “within the universe” of David Cronenberg’s classic film. The film is being directed by Nikyatu Jusu, who emerged with the horror drama “Nanny,” released on Prime Video in 2022. Jusu is also credited with writing the screenplay.
While details of the story remain under wraps, the studio’s strategy to avoid labeling it as a “remake” appears to be a move to dodge any direct comparisons and potential backlash from the audience. Nearly forty years after its release, Cronenberg’s “The Fly” continues to be a seminal work in the body horror genre.
This horror sub-genre, which focuses on transformations and deformations of the human body, is currently highlighted by Coralie Fargeat’s new film “The Substance,” which hits theaters in France on November 6. The success of this film in the United States—featuring Demi Moore and creating a considerable buzz—is likely no small factor in the timing of the announcement of the new project related to “The Fly.”
As of now, no release date has been set.
