“Pathetic & Dated”? Remake of Iconic ’90s Adventure Film Set for Late 2025 Release

A comedic reinterpretation of the 1997 horror film “Anaconda” is set for a 2025 release, starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black. But it’s not quite what you might expect…

Sony is diving into a comedic reboot of “Anaconda.” The studio announced in December that this fresh take on the 1997 horror film by filmmaker Tom Gormican is scheduled to hit theaters just in time for the holiday season on December 25, 2025. Paul Rudd and Jack Black are set to star in the new feature produced by Columbia Pictures.

Directed by Tom Gormican, known for “Ghosted,” the film is based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Kevin Etten. Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing the project under their Fully Formed Entertainment banner.

In the video below, Rudd and Black hype up their new film. “There’s gonna be a freaking huge snake, and it’s gonna be awesome,” Black says about the remake.

“Do you want to be scared? Do you want to laugh? Do you want to party with your friends? Or maybe you’re alone and sad and just want to forget about it?” Paul Rudd added.

It was last August when The Hollywood Reporter first revealed that the film was in development. Plot details are still under wraps.

The Original Film Considered “Pathetic and Cheesy”

In 1997, Luis Llosa directed “Anaconda” with a cast that included Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight. Although it spawned several sequels and focused on a National Geographic film crew in search of the world’s largest and deadliest snake, the original film was considered “pathetic and cheesy” yet grossed over $136 million worldwide (equivalent to $269 million today). The new version will poke fun at all of this.

“Anaconda” will be released in France on December 31, 2025. Fans will have to be a bit more patient. Meanwhile, Paul Rudd can be seen alongside Jenna Ortega in A24’s “Death of a Unicorn,” set for a spring 2025 release. Jack Black will appear in “Minecraft: The Movie,” which is set to premiere in theaters on April 2 of the next year.

Meanwhile, the original “Anaconda” is available for streaming on VOD.
