“One of the Most Pathetic Things I’ve Ever Seen”: Vance Dodges Confirmation of Trump’s 2020 Loss
During a media interaction, JD Vance, the vice-presidential candidate, sidestepped several direct inquiries about whether former President Donald Trump falsely claimed to have won the 2020 election. Labeling such questions as a media “obsession,” Vance declined five separate chances to affirm the election results on Friday.
Speaking to Lulu Garcia-Navarro on “The Interview,” a podcast by The New York Times, Vance continually dismissed the significance of questions regarding Trump’s acceptance of the democratic election’s outcome. He emphasized his focus on future concerns rather than past events.
“Do you believe Trump lost the 2020 election?” Garcia-Navarro asked straightforwardly.
“Both Donald Trump and I have pointed out several issues with the 2020 election,” Vance responded. “There seems to be an obsession with focusing on 2020. I am more concerned with what has happened since then, such as the escalating border crisis and the soaring prices of groceries.”
When pressed again by Garcia-Navarro on whether Joe Biden was the legitimate winner of the November 2020 election, Vance deflected by criticizing tech companies for allegedly censoring a New York Post article about Hunter Biden’s laptop, which he claimed deprived Trump of millions of votes. He still avoided confirming Biden as the election winner.
Garcia-Navarro reiterated the importance of the question, stating, “I’ve asked this several times because it’s crucial for the American public to understand. There is no evidence, legal or otherwise, that Donald Trump did not lose the 2020 election.”
Vance later admitted that he would not have certified the 2020 election results if he were in Congress, attributing his stance to what he described as “industrial-scale censorship” that negatively impacted Trump’s vote count.
Lawyer and author David Lurie remarked, “Vance clearly expressed that he would have dismissed the votes of millions of Americans, enabling the installation of Trump after his loss in the 2020 election.”
Independent journalist Aaron Rupar labeled Vance’s evasion in responding to the direct question as “one of the most pathetic displays I’ve ever seen.”
The conversation occurred shortly after Vance’s debate with Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, where Vance repeated his now-familiar line under direct questioning about Trump’s 2020 election loss and brought up more claims of censorship.
“Tim, I’m focused on the future,” Vance stated during the debate. “Did Kamala Harris suppress Americans’ freedom of speech during the aftermath of the 2020 Covid situation?”
Walz criticized Vance’s evasive response as “a damning non-answer.”
Sarafina Chitika, spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, criticized Vance in a statement following Friday’s interview, calling him “the enabler of Trump’s Project 2025 aspirations.”
“Donald Trump selected JD Vance as his running mate because he will do what Mike Pence refused to do: prioritize Donald Trump over our Constitution,” Chitika asserted. “Vance’s unwillingness to simply acknowledge that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election is a clear indication that if Trump wins, no one will curb his worst impulses or prevent him from obtaining unprecedented, unchecked power, endangering our country.”
