Stranger Things: Why the Creators Dropped the Idea of a Sequel!

As they considered the future of the “Stranger Things” brand, the creators of the Netflix series have shut down an idea that could have delighted fans.

It’s the end of the road for Stranger Things, and there’s no secret ninth episode tucked away in Netflix’s vault. The Duffer brothers, who conceived the series a decade ago, have bid farewell to the residents of Hawkins along with the audience.

In a comprehensive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators confirmed that they have not planned any sequels to Stranger Things. Not now, not ever.

“Mike is closing the basement door. We’re turning the page on this story. It’s the end of their story. It’s the end of the story for Mike, Eleven, Joyce, and Hopper. We’ve finished saying everything we wanted to say about these characters, this story, and the Upside Down.”

“I mean, I guess a sequel could focus on a midlife crisis. But that really doesn’t sound appealing! Grandpa Hopper? I can’t see that as anything other than a crude attempt to make money.”

This stark admission is a letdown for the most hardcore fans—convinced a hidden episode would truly wrap up the plot—especially since they were disappointed by the sci-fi series’ conclusion. Not necessarily by what happened to the characters, but by the numerous unanswered questions. In fact, they’ve counted about 80.

By closing the door on any kind of sequel, the Duffer brothers have alienated some viewers who wanted a definitive end to the story. However, the twin screenwriters are not quite done with Netflix, even though they’ve decided to leave for a competitor.

“Telling a Story in the Spirit of Stranger Things”

Netflix and the Duffers are cooking up other projects related to the Stranger Things brand: an animated series titled “Chronicles of 1985” that will cover events between seasons 4 and 5, and a mysterious spin-off.

“Ross and I are really excited to explore new characters and a new mythology, but we’re still very interested in telling a story in the spirit of Stranger Things. It’s a completely new mythology. This spin-off is connected to the series and will answer some of the lingering questions. It won’t specifically deal with the Mind Flayer or the Upside Down, but I hope it will at least provide answers to the lingering questions related to Henry’s memory,” Matt Duffer shared with the American site.

Everything is still very vague, but the stone that the young scout finds in the suitcase will be the starting point for this series, which will not take place in the 1980s or in Hawkins. It will likely be set in the 1950s when the government was conducting experiments in the Nevada desert.

Given that the stone comes from Dimension X, it’s hard to imagine the writers avoiding any mention of the Mind Flayer who resides there, but we trust them when they promise to address some of the unresolved questions. For now, nothing is known about the cast, so it will be a wait of two or perhaps three years before this spin-off hits the big screen.

In the meantime, subscribers can look forward to a documentary film revisiting the creation of season 5, which will be available on Netflix on January 12.
