American Critics in the Administration’s Crosshairs
Journalist Ken Klippenstein has recently highlighted how Americans voicing dissent are increasingly targeted by the Trump administration.
Human rights proponents have vehemently condemned the Trump administration’s forced removal of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and other migrants, invoking fundamental principles of the U.S. Constitution, particularly the right to due process. However, during a Tuesday night interview, President Donald Trump’s chief counterterrorism advisor suggested that those defending these constitutional principles might be inadvertently supporting terrorists.
Ken Klippenstein, an independent reporter, disclosed comments made by Sebastian Gorka, the White House Senior Director for Counterterrorism, during a discussion on Newsmax. Gorka argued that the conflict between the administration — which has notably detained numerous individuals at a notorious overseas detention facility without trial and disregarded a Supreme Court directive — and its critics essentially comes down to those who “love America” versus those who “hate America.”
According to Gorka, those who forsake constitutional rights afforded to everyone in the U.S. are presumably patriots.
“We have individuals who adore America, like the president, his Cabinet, and agency directors, who are committed to safeguarding Americans,” Gorka claimed. “Then there’s the opposition, aligning with cartel members, undocumented immigrants, and terrorists.”
“You have to wonder if they’re indirectly supporting these criminals and terrorists,” Gorka added, alluding to the idea that such support could constitute a federal crime.
In his newsletter, Klippenstein explored the potential for Gorka’s deeply partisan views to be implemented as governmental policy, pointing out that these remarks were made just a day before Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) was scheduled to visit El Salvador. The Senator aimed to discuss the release of Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident whom the Trump administration has wrongfully labeled a “convicted” MS-13 gang member despite his clean criminal record.
“The Trump administration has already taken the unprecedented action of officially categorizing various ‘transnational criminal organizations,’ gangs, and drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations,” Klippenstein noted. “With this framework, the only step left to actualize Gorka’s threats would be to assert that critics of Trump’s immigration and deportation policies are offering these groups ‘material support.’”
Gorka implied that actions like Van Hollen’s diplomatic efforts could eventually lead to serious legal charges against the senator.
The counterterrorism advisor openly criticized Democrats for their focus on the rights of Abrego Garcia, whom he dismissively referred to as a terrorist.
“Are you referring to the terrorist who illegally entered our country?” he echoed President Nayib Bukele’s unfounded claim, made earlier in the White House, that the Maryland resident was a proven terrorist.
Klippenstein cautioned that while Gorka’s remarks might seem to be based on an extremist legal theory, the advisor now wields significant influence in shaping Trump’s counterterrorism policies, a marked change from his earlier, more marginal role in Trump’s first term.
Under Gorka’s direction, the administration’s focus has shifted towards suppressing anti-Trump demonstrations, such as those occurring at Tesla dealerships.
“Emerging threats such as so-called Tesla terrorism and potential anti-Trump violence are redefining our security priorities,” a senior intelligence official told Klippenstein.
On Wednesday, Klippenstein wrote that Gorka’s statements indicate the Trump administration’s intent to increasingly target domestic dissent in its broadening internal security efforts, potentially ensnaring anyone who opposes Trump’s disregard for judicial authority and his immigration policies.
“While the press understandably concentrates on migrants and deportees,” Klippenstein remarked, “Americans are progressively finding themselves targeted.”
