UnitedHealthcare CEO Murdered in Targeted Attack, Largest US Private Insurer Rocked

UnitedHealthcare CEO Fatally Shot in Manhattan

Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed early Wednesday morning outside a hotel in midtown Manhattan.

At a news conference, Jessica Tisch, the Commissioner of the New York Police Department, reported that Thompson’s death seemed to be “a bold, deliberate assault. At this point, it looks like it was not a random incident.” After the shooting, Thompson was rushed to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

Thompson, aged 50, was apparently on his way to the annual investor conference for his company scheduled at the New York Hilton Hotel. His LinkedIn profile reveals that Thompson had been with UnitedHealth Group for two decades, taking on the role of CEO for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. He lived in Minnesota, as confirmed by the NYPD.

The NYPD suggests that the assailant had been waiting for a few minutes before he ambushed Thompson, shooting him several times from behind. “The suspect let many people pass by, choosing to attack only his specific target,” the commissioner explained.

The perpetrator, who is believed to be male according to an NYPD detective, escaped the scene initially by foot and subsequently on an e-bike. He was last spotted early this morning in Central Park. Authorities are actively searching for the gunman.
