In Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael,” the pop king’s sister is the only Jackson family member not to make an appearance. But why?
Antoine Fuqua’s biographical film “Michael” chronicles a segment of the pop king’s life, from his early days with the Jackson Five to his peak solo success in the late 1980s. Making his film debut in the title role is the singer’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson.
The film pays meticulous attention to detail, from costumes to concert recreations, aiming for a high degree of mimicry. The lead actor, whose resemblance to Michael Jackson is uncanny, even manages to lose himself in the character during the film’s second hour.
Janet Jackson’s Absence
While many members of the Jackson family appear on screen—from parents to brothers and sister La Toya Jackson—there is one notable absence: Janet Jackson. The youngest of the Jackson clan is completely missing from the film. She is also the only sibling not listed in the credits as an executive producer, a role held by all other family members in their capacity as consultants.
Her absence is particularly striking given that Janet Jackson achieved fame comparable to her brother’s. In the 1980s, she was one of the biggest pop stars globally, alongside Madonna, who was considered her rival.
Janet Jackson was invited to participate in the project but declined any involvement. According to the American tabloid TMZ, she was also not pleased with the final version of the film, leading to a conflict with one of the brothers, Jermaine Jackson—whose son, Jaafar Jackson, portrays the singer on screen.
“A Film Full of Inaccuracies,” Says Paris Jackson
Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson’s daughter, was also completely absent from the film’s production and premieres—unlike her two brothers, Prince and Bigi Jackson. In a video released in September 2025, she openly stated:
“I gave my feedback on the first draft of the script and was told they would not consider my comments (…) So, I dropped it and haven’t touched it since, because it’s not my project. They will do what they want (…) The film caters to a very specific segment of my father’s fans, those who still live in fantasy.”
She continued: “Many people say: ‘She hates her father’, ‘She resents him’… Just because I’m not in charge on the set, as a major producer of a film full of inaccuracies. Well, that’s not my truth, that’s not my perspective. I prefer honesty over sales and profit, that’s all, and I want nothing to do with it.“
