In 2012, French filmmaker Florent-Emilio Siri introduced the trailer for his masterful biopic on the life of Claude François.
Claude François, a true icon of French pop music who left an indelible mark on a generation with hits like Alexandrie, Alexandra, Comme d’habitude, Cette année-là, Si j’avais un marteau, and Magnolias For Ever, certainly deserved his story to be told on the big screen in a fitting tribute.
One of the Finest French Musical Biopics
At a time when cinema is captivated by singers’ lives, the urge to create a film about the absolutely intriguing life of the man affectionately known as Cloclo was irresistible. Eight years after the release of Podium (in which Benoît Poelvoorde dreamed of becoming an official Claude François impersonator), 2012 saw the release of a major biographical film dedicated to the singer.
Directed by Florent Emilio-Siri, known for his work on Nid de guêpes and L’Ennemi intime, Cloclo is widely regarded as one of the best in its genre, at least in French cinema. Audiences agreed, giving it a handsome rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
Although it follows a traditional chronological format, Cloclo is nonetheless a tour de force in direction. Filled with brilliant ideas and perfectly paced with Claude’s songs, the film is both captivating and driven by the immense talent of its lead actor, Jérémie Renier, whose performance is strikingly realistic.
A Trailer as Successful as the Film
The trailer, which was shown in cinemas several weeks before the release of Cloclo, set the stage perfectly for a great film. Upon viewing the film ourselves, it was clear that the trailer had set accurate expectations.
“Tomorrow, you leave the house.” “I won’t wait that long.” “There are a lot of roosters in the henhouse.” “If I sing that, I’ll make you a gold record.”
Peppered with soon-to-be iconic lines, this high-quality trailer previewed many epic scenes while irresistibly getting us to tap our feet in our red theater seats. From grand concert scenes and verbal sparring with producers to emotional outbursts and rising tensions, all the promises of Cloclo were encapsulated in these initial clips, and the audience was eager to see more.
