20 Years Ago, Halle Berry Was Tricked into a Marvel Movie Disaster!

It was only years later that the truth came to light: to persuade Halle Berry to return as Storm in “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006), producers allegedly used a fake script. Director Matthew Vaughn claims he discovered this deceit just before leaving the project.

During the 2023 New York Comic-Con, Vaughn—who is known for his work on Kick-Ass and the Kingsman series—shared a disturbing episode from his brief involvement with the third installment of the X-Men trilogy. Originally set to direct the film, he opted to step down after uncovering what he viewed as an attempt to manipulate the Oscar-winning actress.

While visiting the offices of 20th Century Fox, Matthew Vaughn stumbled upon a thick X-Men 3 script. Curious, he opened it and read an introductory scene in which Storm helps children in Africa suffering from drought by creating a rainstorm to provide them with water. “This is a true story and I don’t care if I’m not supposed to reveal it. Hollywood is very political and weird. I was in an executive’s office and saw a script for X-Men 3. It was much thicker. I asked, ‘What’s this draft?’ They said, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ So I took it and read the first page, and it said, ‘Africa. Children dying from lack of water, and Storm creates a storm to save all these children.’ I thought it was a pretty cool idea,” he recounted.

Impressed by this heroine-focused opening, he asked for more details. The response he received was shocking. “I asked, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘It’s Halle Berry’s script because she hasn’t signed yet. It’s what she wants it to be. And once she signs, we’ll throw this script in the trash.’”

Faced with what he saw as a blatant lack of ethics, Vaughn decided to walk away. “I thought if you do this to an Oscar-winning actress playing Storm, I quit. I stopped right then. I felt like I was cannon fodder,” he told the audience.

Eventually, Brett Ratner took over as director of the film, which was released in 2006. Despite the behind-the-scenes controversies, “X-Men: The Last Stand” was a box office success, grossing nearly $459 million globally.

Halle Berry’s Response

Halle Berry, for her part, was reportedly never informed of this scheme at the time. It was only last year that she responded by sharing a TikTok video on X (formerly Twitter) that revisited the incident. “You just never know the shady stuff going on behind your back! Thank you, Matthew Vaughn, for bringing the darkness to light,” she commented.

Berry reprised her role in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in 2014, while Matthew Vaughn officially joined the mutant universe with “X-Men: First Class” in 2011.

Fans Advocate for a Standalone Film

Since these revelations, many fans have expressed their outrage and praised Vaughn’s action as a testament to his integrity. Some even lament that the imagined opening scene—although fictitious—was never filmed, believing it would have added significant depth to Storm’s character.

One thing is certain: the audience is more ready than ever for a solo film dedicated to her. Under Halle Berry’s post, the calls—this time, without any phony scripts—have indeed multiplied, as evidenced…
