Mark Wahlberg Eyes One Superhero Role: “It’s Realistic, Plausible, and True”

Back in the 1970s, viewers were introduced to Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors. He was the hero of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” an astronaut who survives a horrific accident thanks to a groundbreaking surgical procedure.

Parts of his body were replaced with bionic implants, giving him tremendous strength, incredible speed, and enhanced vision. These abilities made him a valuable field agent, carrying out secret missions for the government.

It’s this character that Mark Wahlberg is eager to bring to the big screen. He sees Steve Austin as possessing all the attributes of a superhero, yet rooted in a reality not entirely disconnected from our own.

The Only Superhero Mark Wahlberg Cares About

In 2024, during a promotional event for the Netflix film “The Union,” which he co-starred in with Halle Berry, Wahlberg was asked by ComicBook about a potential move to Marvel or DC. His answer was straightforward: neither franchise really appeals to him.

His passion project remains a modernized adaptation of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” now renamed “The Six Billion Dollar Man” to reflect inflationary changes. The actor humorously explained, “You know, I have a superhero movie in mind, and it’s The Six Billion Dollar Man, formerly known as The Six Million Dollar Man, where prices have gone up due to inflation.”

Beyond the joke, Mark Wahlberg sees current technological advancements as an opportunity to make Steve Austin’s capabilities far more believable than they were in the original series.

“It’s realistic, it’s plausible, it’s real. You know, there’s a lot of bionic technology and science being developed right now. So, it’s something that has all the potential of a superhero, doing incredible things.“

Tight Costumes? No Thanks

Wahlberg’s preference for a more realistic character also stems from a deeply personal reason. He simply doesn’t feel comfortable enough to appear in one of the flashy, tight costumes associated with comic book heroes.

Even encouragement from Halle Berry, who is familiar with this universe through her roles as Storm in the X-Men saga and Catwoman, couldn’t sway him.

“I don’t need to wear one of those costumes. I don’t have enough self-confidence to walk around in one of those costumes. Halle says, ‘Oh, you’d look great in one of those costumes,’ and I say, ‘It’s not about the physical appearance, it’s about the mental confidence to step out of my trailer.‘”

A Film Stuck in Development for Over a Decade

Although Mark Wahlberg remains committed to this adaptation, its realization has been delayed. Announced over a decade ago, the film has faced numerous setbacks, including legal issues regarding rights and several changes in directors.

Peter Berg, Damián Szifron, and Travis Knight have been successively linked to its direction, yet no version has made it to filming.

The project has never been officially shelved. Wahlberg could still become this multi-billion-dollar bionic man, provided that the adaptation finally moves out of its lengthy development phase.

While waiting for its possible return to the screen, the original adventures of “The Six Million Dollar Man” are available on DVD.
