First Look: “Changing the Water of the Flowers” Film Trailer with Leïla Bekhti by Jean-Pierre Jeunet!

It has been 13 years since the acclaimed filmmaker last released a feature film in theaters, following his English-language movie The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet.

After venturing into television series (Casanova), and the Netflix film BigBug, the director returns with an ambitious feature film, destined for great success. Jean-Pierre Jeunet brings to the screen the novel of the same name by Valérie Perrin, which has sold over 3 million copies.

What’s it about?

Violette, in her forties, is a cemetery keeper in a small town in Burgundy. Her daily life is punctuated by the confidences of passers-by and regulars who find some comfort in her lodge.

One day, she is visited by a police officer, Julien Seul, who comes to scatter his mother’s ashes on the grave of the man she loved. Intrigued by Violette’s story, whose husband mysteriously disappeared shortly after their arrival at the cemetery, he decides to investigate, unwittingly uncovering painful memories and life-changing truths for Violette.

Which actress could be the ideal Violette Toussaint, the cemetery keeper? Yesterday, during a meeting with the audience at the Angoulême Festival, Jean-Pierre Jeunet mentioned he had considered working with Audrey Tautou. “I won’t hide the fact that I thought of Audrey Tautou, it won’t surprise anyone, obviously!” However, with the actress deciding to step away from film sets to focus on her family, the filmmaker had an epiphany about Leïla Bekhti and her ability to convey emotion. “I watch all the films, I do research, I watch interviews… And I came across a show on Canal+ by Kyan Khojandi.“

The actress had already demonstrated her ability to convey deep and subtle emotions in Ken Scott’s Ma Mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan, which earned her a César nomination earlier this year. And it’s this sensitivity that convinced the director she was the perfect “Violette.” The character, both discreet and endearing, reveals herself through the confidences of the visitors she welcomes each day, blending gentleness, melancholy, and mystery.
