Florence Pugh’s New Series Tops Netflix Globally Despite Worst Launch Since March!

Released on October 1st, the mini-series “East of Eden” led by Florence Pugh has topped the global Netflix viewing charts. However, this appears to be a deceptive success, as indicated by the initial viewership data from the platform for the past week. While it ranks first, the series shows relatively modest numbers.

Being Number One on Netflix Doesn’t Necessarily Mean High Viewership

Indeed, the show has amassed 6.5 million views, which translates to about 45.5 million viewing hours. However, according to Deadline, this is the weakest launch for a Netflix production since last March. For comparison, other historical mini-series like “Dawn of America” and “All the Light We Cannot See” garnered around 10 million views in their first week.

Another significant statistic: sales of John Steinbeck’s novel surged by 200% this week. Admittedly, Netflix likely had no greater aim with this adaptation than to vie for nominations at upcoming Golden Globes and Emmy Awards. And the viewership figures will not influence its renewal, as the program was planned as a one-season mini-series.

Netflix Already Has More Plans

As for the series’ creator, Zoe Kazan, she will soon tackle another classic of American literature, “Lonesome Dove.” This multi-part novel by Jim McMurtry is often referenced as a major inspiration for the series Yellowstone, particularly its prequel 1883.

As for Florence Pugh, who starred in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” this summer, she will appear in December’s two biggest blockbusters anticipated this year: “Dune: Part Three” and “Avengers: Doomsday.” Will she see her name on the list of nominees at the next Golden Globes?
