Nearly three decades after the release of Titanic, Kate Winslet has shared some surprising details about the film’s romantic scenes, which dominated the box office for a decade!
A Legendary Scene That Wasn’t So Romantic!
Ever since Titanic hit theaters in 1997, one scene in particular has lingered in the minds of audiences worldwide. The ship has sunk, and Jack lifts Rose onto a floating door, regrettably too frail to hold two freezing bodies. Shivering, the submerged young painter clasps his beloved’s hands before succumbing to the cold as he sings her a lullaby. It’s a tragic scene of eternal love designed to shatter anyone’s heart… except for Kate Winslet’s!
Indeed, the English actress has retained a rather pragmatic memory of the filming, which was not as uncomfortable as it might appear. At a premiere screening of Lee, her biopic about the renowned war correspondent Lee Miller, Kate Winslet shared a 28-year-old anecdote about one of Titanic’s most iconic scenes.
Kate Winslet Shatters the Myth of Titanic!
Kate Winslet revealed that her co-star from The Revenant feared nothing: “The water was waist deep. I’m afraid Leo was on his knees. I shouldn’t say this—James Cameron is going to call me,” joked Winslet, not eager to be scolded by the director of Avatar. But that wasn’t all she had to say!
In a May 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, the actress shed new light on another famous scene from the film, where the two lovers “fly” at the ship’s bow. “It was a nightmare filming that scene! I could barely breathe in that damn corset, and Leo kept laughing,” the actress, known for her role in Sense and Sensibility, confessed.
“We had to climb a tiny ladder to get to the set, and the makeup artist couldn’t come up. You won’t believe it, but even though Leo looks natural, he’s wearing layers of foundation! So in my jacket, I had hidden foundation on one side and sponges and cotton on the other, and between takes, I would touch up his makeup.” A nearly 30-year-old memory that somewhat tarnishes the romanticism of this often-parodied scene!
