“He’s immensely talented as an actor, but…” Why did James Cameron stand in for Leonardo DiCaprio in one specific “Titanic” scene? Find out below!
There’s no question about Leonardo DiCaprio’s immense acting skills, and James Cameron’s prowess as a director is equally notable. Each excels in their field. However, there was one particular skill that DiCaprio lacked, which required Cameron to step in during a very specific scene in Titanic involving this expertise… Can you guess what it is? Here’s a hint: it involves a certain sketch…
While promoting his book Tech Noir – The Art of James Cameron in Paris last year, the renowned director of Avatar and Terminator revealed during the French show C à vous that it’s actually his hand seen in the iconic scene where Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) draws Rose (Kate Winslet) in her birthday suit, reclining elegantly on a couch. This scene is one of the most crucial and memorable in the movie: after all, it’s this sketch that is discovered decades later, kickstarting the story…
In the scene, the camera captures Rose posing, Jack’s gaze at his muse, and “his” hand drawing the portrait. However, the hand in question isn’t Leonardo DiCaprio’s, nor is it that of a hired artist, but rather James Cameron’s own hand!
However, filming this was not without its challenges, as the director explained on the set of the France 5 show.
“Leonardo DiCaprio is a hugely talented actor, but he can’t draw at all. I did the sketch, and then Leo pretends to draw in his notebook, but that’s the issue,” he shared. “Whenever we needed shots of the portrait being sketched, it’s my hand drawing, but I’m left-handed and Leo uses his right hand. We had to flip the image in the movie, so it’s twice as difficult.“
This technical nuance gave the impression that it was indeed the actor sketching his co-star, adding to the magic of the scene – and cleverly hiding Leonardo DiCaprio’s lack of drawing skills in the process! It’s interesting to note that the entire drawing is indeed attributed to James Cameron; this portrait and many others can be found in his book Tech Noir.
But that’s not all: did you know that James Cameron also appears both vocally and physically in Titanic? Indeed, it’s his voice we hear shouting “Full steam ahead!” which is then echoed by the ship’s crew. You can also spot him in a brief cameo at the beginning of the film during the boarding scene, where he is getting his beard inspected… He truly is everywhere!
Now that you’re acquainted with these behind-the-scenes tidbits, why not rewatch Titanic, available on Disney+, and spot all these details for yourself!
