The biggest enthusiasts of this iconic film can proudly claim they’ve watched it dozens or even hundreds of times! Surprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio, who initially wanted to turn down the leading role, is not one of them.
Released in 1998 in France, Titanic is arguably one of the most famous and beloved films globally. Ask any fan how many times they’ve seen it, and you’ll likely hear “dozens of times.”
A Surprising Admission
However, Leonardo DiCaprio, the film’s star, has a different story. In an interview with Variety during a discussion with Jennifer Lawrence, the 51-year-old actor shockingly revealed he has never watched Titanic! When Lawrence asked if he had revisited the James Cameron epic, DiCaprio unequivocally responded, “No, I haven’t watched it at all.” This revelation surprised Lawrence, who commented, “Oh, you should! I’m sure you can watch it now; it’s really good,” highlighting the film’s quality.
“I don’t really watch my movies,” DiCaprio admitted, turning the question to his colleague, “How about you?” Lawrence replied, “No. But I’ve never done something like Titanic. If I had, I would watch it. Once, I was really drunk and I put on American Hustle. I wondered if I was a good actress or not. I started watching, but I don’t remember what the answer was,” she said humorously.

Leo’s Continuous Resolve
DiCaprio remains resolute in moving forward and never looking back. His sentiments are echoed by James Cameron, who recently discussed casting DiCaprio for Titanic in an interview with Laurent Delahousse on France 2. “I had to convince Leonardo to take on the film; he didn’t want to do it,” Cameron revealed.
“He felt the role wasn’t challenging enough. Being just a pretty face in the film didn’t interest him. I told him the key was to captivate the audience with that beauty. That’s when he finally accepted the role,” Cameron explained.
“But after Titanic’s success, he didn’t enjoy the intense spotlight. He wanted to engage in serious work and avoid being the center of attention. He stepped back from discussions about the film much more than Kate Winslet, who managed to put everything into perspective more easily than Leonardo,” the Avatar director concluded.

Following his roles in one challenging project after another and his collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson, DiCaprio has several projects in the pipeline, including What Happens At Night, a fantasy film by Martin Scorsese also featuring Jennifer Lawrence. He is also set to appear in the highly anticipated Heat 2, by Michael Mann, a sequel to the 90s classic starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
