Kevin Costner was willing to leave the hit series “Yellowstone” to make his four-part western, but unfortunately, the project didn’t meet expectations…
It’s what you’d call a failed gamble. Kevin Costner, a titan of American cinema, is also revered as a distinguished director. He was awarded the Oscar for Best Director in 1991, a remarkable feat considering it was his directorial debut.
Yellowstone Revived Kevin Costner’s Directing Career
After directing “Open Range” in 2003, Kevin Costner experienced a significant lull in Hollywood. It was the series “Yellowstone” that brought him back into the limelight. His portrayal of John Dutton, a ruthless ranch owner, not only revived his career but also earned him critical acclaim and public admiration.
This success also rejuvenated his directing career. That’s why Kevin Costner was determined to realize his biggest dream: directing “Horizon,” a series of four films depicting the true story of the American West. An ambitious project, he did not hesitate to invest all his personal savings (about $100 million) into it.
Why Did He Leave Yellowstone Before Finishing Shooting?
The production of “Horizon” also led to his departure from “Yellowstone.” Truth be told, Kevin Costner had already been on rocky terms with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, and his co-stars. The filming of “Horizon” provided a perfect opportunity for him to bow out before the final episodes were completed.
Unfortunately, this decisive choice did not pay off for Kevin Costner. Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, the first installment of “Horizon” was a box office bomb, earning only $39 million. This failure resulted in the cancellation of the second film’s release and the halting of the third film’s production.
Kevin Costner Will Never Abandon His Directorial Dream
At a press conference, his voice laden with emotion, the director revealed he would do everything in his power to ensure his project does not remain unfinished: “It’s a rope I can’t let go of. I don’t know yet how I’ll make the third one. But I will make it.”
For Kevin Costner, “Horizon” is not just a film, and he still hopes to find the necessary funds to resume filming the saga. He must now place his fate in the hands of others, as he no longer has the income needed to finance the continuation of the project. Ironically, the substantial salary he earned from “Yellowstone” would have been sufficient to cover the budget for parts three and four of his saga…
Did “Horizon” deserve such failure? Fans of Kevin Costner can now see for themselves, as the first installment of the saga is available on Prime Video.
