In a recent interview, Kevin Costner subtly criticized the “Yellowstone” series, questioning its narrative credibility.
Nearly a year after his departure, one might have thought Kevin Costner would soften his stance. However, the American actor and director never misses an opportunity to critique the “Yellowstone” series, which concluded its final season without him last December. He shared his thoughts during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Kevin Costner Offers a Subtle Jab at the Series
Speaking to the media, Kevin Costner expressed his ongoing hope to direct a third installment of his western saga Horizon. The first film was a box-office bomb, earning only $38 million against a budget of $100 million, leading to the cancellation of the second film’s release in French cinemas.
In the interview, the 70-year-old actor revisited the biggest westerns of his career, from “Dances with Wolves” to “Yellowstone.” Regarding the series, he praised its beautiful representation of modern ranching in American ranches.
However, the actor who played John Dutton also described the show as a “soap opera,” and remarked that all the characters in the show “should be in prison.” This was his way of subtly pointing out the series’ lack of plot credibility.
Yellowstone Saga Continues Without Him with Several New Series
Kevin Costner appears not ready to make amends with “Yellowstone.” And why should he? The series’ creator, Taylor Sheridan, did not hesitate to mock the American actor’s age and appearance in an episode of the fifth season.
Thus, the possibility of John Dutton appearing in the upcoming spin-offs—inevitably in flashbacks—does not seem likely. These include “The Dutton Ranch,” which will focus on the couple Beth Dutton and Rip, and “Y: Marshals,” following the new adventures of Kayce Dutton.
All series from the Yellowstone universe are now exclusively available on Paramount+.
