Jason Momoa is making a grand return to television with a new epic historical drama. Here’s the first trailer for the series “Chief of War”.
Jason Momoa’s partnership with Apple TV+ continues with a series he developed for the platform following their initial successful collaboration. From 2019 to 2022, Jason Momoa starred in the three-season series “See” by Steven Knight.
In “See,” he played what he describes as “the best role of his career,” Baba Voss, the leader of a human clan that has lost its sense of sight in a far-off future. He struggles to protect his people from a powerful queen determined to destroy them.

A Passion Project for Jason Momoa
The series, which narrates the unification and colonization of Hawaii from the perspective of its native people, represents a lifelong project for Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbbett, both of Hawaiian descent.
They have cast predominantly Polynesian actors, including Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett), Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka.
Jason Momoa also stars alongside New Zealand actress Luciane Buchanan, of Tongan descent, known for her role as Rose Larkin in the Netflix mini-series The Night Agent.
Set in the Hawaiian archipelago, Chief of War follows the warrior Ka’iana (Jason Momoa) as he attempts to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century. Notably, the soundtrack for Chief of War is composed by Hans Zimmer and James Everingham.
The first two episodes of “Chief of War” will be available on Friday, August 1, 2025, on Apple TV+, with a new episode released every Friday through September 19.
