Before becoming the Oscar-winning star known for Good Will Hunting and Argo, Ben Affleck made his modest film debut in an overlooked movie: The Dark End of the Street.

Directed by Jan Egleson in 1981, the film takes us to North Cambridge, a working-class neighborhood in Boston. It follows Donna (Laura Harrington), a young woman who dreams of a better life and spends her time with her boyfriend Billy (Henry Tomaszewski). One evening, they witness the fatal fall of a young black man from the roof of a building.

While Donna wants to alert the authorities, Billy, who has had past troubles with the law, convinces her to remain silent. Their fear of the consequences leads them to hide what they saw. However, their silence soon allows the police to suspect another young black man, wrongly accused of causing the death.

Donna then faces a deep dilemma: protect her future or reveal the truth. In the neighborhood, racial and social tensions, already present, begin to intensify. The secret that binds Donna and Billy increasingly weighs on their relationship and those around them.

Through their story, Jan Egleson explores the transition to adulthood, the fear, and the consequences of silence in the face of injustice. The film realistically portrays the struggles of working-class youth caught between the desire for emancipation, loyalty, and responsibility.

This film marks the screen debut of a young Ben Affleck, then just 8 years old. The future international star played a small boy named Tommy alongside Laura Harrington, Henry Tomaszewski, and Lance Henriksen.

This minor role kickstarted his career, leading to further appearances in film and television, before his breakthrough role in Good Will Hunting alongside his close friend Matt Damon. Now 54, he remains one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Affleck will soon return to directing with Animals, a Netflix thriller set to premiere on October 9. The plot centers around a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife, whose son is kidnapped. As they desperately try to gather the ransom and buried lies are suddenly exposed, they are forced to make decisions that could destroy their family and their ambitions. Ben Affleck not only directs but also stars in the leading role of the film.
