Rejected! Matt Damon’s Tough Audition for a Top ’90s Legal Thriller 30 Years Ago

Three decades ago, Matt Damon missed out on a key role in a major legal thriller. Ironically, this failure laid the groundwork for his future triumph in Hollywood…

Breaking into Hollywood might seem as easy as writing your own script and starring in it, but it’s rarely that straightforward, even if it worked out that way for Matt Damon. Yet, he and his lifelong friend, Ben Affleck, faced numerous hurdles for years before they could step onto the set of Gus Van Sant’s “Good Will Hunting” and see their dream materialize. Even then, the duo could never have predicted winning an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, a Best Actor nomination for Damon, and a box office hit raking in $225 million. Astonishingly, less than two years prior to the start of filming, Van Sant was nearly at a breaking point…

Familiar with seeing the same faces at auditions – with Chris O’Donnell becoming his arch rival – Matt Damon was savvy enough to recognize that the right script could transform a career. He found one, aware it would revolutionize the career of whoever played the part, but it wasn’t to be him.

“It was actually the film ‘Primal Fear’ that was a kind of epiphany for us,” he explained (via FarOut Magazine). “For some reason, that role got freed up. I don’t know how it slipped past all these well-known young actors, but it did. And it was a great role. And it went to the jackals, that’s all.”

A Missed Role That Changed Everything

By “well-known young actors,” he was referring primarily to Leonardo DiCaprio, who had turned down the role of Aaron Stampler, setting off a real frenzy. Matt Damon then jumped into the fray, alongside actors like James Van Der Beek, Pedro Pascal, and James Marsden, among thousands of other hopefuls vying for the part.

“And there it was, we all had our shot,” he reminisced about that pivotal moment. “I even managed to afford a dialect coach with a budget I barely had. I really worked hard for that audition. And it was Edward Norton who ended up getting the part.” Yet, Edward Norton was a relative unknown: he had never appeared in a film or TV show before. But it turned out he was the right man for the job.

The Birth of a Cult Screenplay

In his screen debut, Norton earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor thanks to an outstanding performance. Matt Damon, devastated at missing what he had predicted would be a career-defining opportunity, decided to take control of his destiny, a decision that proved fruitful in the long run.

“That’s when Ben and I said: ‘Well, we have to write this screenplay,’” he explained. “It was the only way to get good roles.” After the setback of ‘Primal Fear,’ he focused all his energy on the screenplay for ‘Good Will Hunting,’ and the gamble paid off handsomely.

‘Primal Fear’ and ‘Good Will Hunting’ are available to rediscover on Paramount+. Matt Damon will soon appear in ‘The Odyssey’ by Christopher Nolan, scheduled for release on July 15 in France.
