Matt Damon almost starred in one of the greatest superhero movies in cinematic history! So, can you guess which blockbuster we’re talking about?
Twenty-two years ago, the cinema saw the release of The Dark Knight Rises, one of Christopher Nolan’s finest films. In this iconic blockbuster, which received a 4.3 out of 5 from AlloCiné viewers, Christian Bale portrayed Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman. Alongside him could have been another well-known name: Matt Damon!
Matt Damon Declined a Role in The Dark Knight
Last July, Matt Damon was the special guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz. During the show, he revealed a well-kept secret: he turned down the biggest hit in superhero movie history, The Dark Knight.
When asked, “Is it hard to watch movies like The Dark Knight Rises knowing you could have been part of them?“, the American actor, who gets emotional watching the movie We Bought a Zoo, candidly replied, “It was a minor role, and I was already committed to another film“, even though he is aware that this film could have earned him a very large sum of money: “I also gave up the biggest paycheck in Hollywood history. Financially speaking… it doesn’t get worse than that.“
Does the Actor Regret His Decision?
Despite missing out on this great opportunity, the star of The Martian insists he has no regrets. He believes that each actor naturally finds the roles meant for them, as he mentioned in the interview: “I sincerely believe that actors end up with the roles that are meant for them.” His bold refusal comes without regrets.
Matt Damon, who almost missed out on his key role in The Martian, did not specify which film he had passed on The Dark Knight for, which was shot between 2007 and 2008. However, considering the release dates, one might think of The Informant! by Steven Soderbergh, Invictus by Clint Eastwood, or even Green Zone by Paul Greengrass, in which he played the leading role each time. A missed opportunity? Not really, according to the actor, who remains sportsmanlike.
